• Automated Backup, Tiering and Archiving with NetApp

We deliver the trusted solutions of a NetApp Alliance Partner

How we partner with NetApp?

NetApp is a data storage and data management company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.  NetApp Storage refers to the hardware and software solutions provided by NetApp.  The NetApp Filer, also called NetApp FAS (Fabric-Attached Storage) is a data storage device driven by their high-performance operating system called Data ONTAP.  Data is served to network clients using either file-based (NAS) or block-based (SAN) protocols.

PoINT Software & Systems is a NetApp Advantage Alliance Partner who have delivered numerous Integrations of NetApp Certified Applications.

PoINT Storage Manager is a policy-based file tiering and archiving solution that is tightly integrated with the NetApp FPolicy API, and addresses the problems associated with the growth of inactive and unstructured data stored on NetApp FAS systems.

PoINT Archival Gateway provides integration with StorageGRID to transparently backup and archive data objects to tape library systems using an S3–compatible interface.

Managing Data on NetApp FAS Systems

The NetApp integration of PoINT Storage Manager uses the FPolicy file reparse mechanism to retain read access from Primary Storage to data which has been moved to Secondary/Archive Storage. Clients and applications access data files from the Archive Storage via a direct read mechanism, without restore to the Primary Storage The process is completely transparent to users and does not require changes to security controls or file system configuration.

Using  PSM with NetApp FPolicy inactive and unstructured data can be archived from NetApp FAS to less-expensive storage such as Public Cloud (Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure), Tape optical. It also has Certified integration with NetApp E Series, Snap Lock & Storage GRID.  Up to four Secondary/Archive targets can be defined for replicating copies of archived data onto multiple physical and Cloud storage devices.

Archiving Data to NetApp StorageGRID

NetApp StorageGRID is an Object Storage platform that combines storage, compute, and object storage software into a single solution to create a building block for highly-scalable Private Cloud and Hybrid Cloud storage.

PoINT Storage Manager can utilize NetApp StorageGRID as an archive device, where inactive data can be automatically archived from Windows, EMC VNX, EMC Isilon, or any NAS system.

Configuring StorageGRID for archiving data is as simple as 1-2-3:

  1. Select Object Store from PoINT Storage Manager Setup
  2. Select NetApp StorageGRID Webscale from Advanced Connectors drop-down
  3. Enter the Address, Container Name, and Port Number and Click OK
  • STEP 1: Select Object Store from PoINT Storage Manager Setup

  • STEP 2: Select NetApp StorageGRID Webscale from the “Advanced Connectors” drop-down

  • STEP 3: Enter the Address, Container Name, and Port Number and Click OK

Extending the capacity of StorageGRID using all Tape Libraries

Most disk and flash-based storage systems are overloaded with inactive and cold unstructured data.  This applies to NAS and SAN storage systems, and increasingly to object storage systems such as StorageGRID Webscale.  The use of these systems to store data that has not been accessed for months or years is an inefficient use of storage resources.  Enterprises need a solution that optimizes the load profile of existing storage systems and that helps fulfill data archiving requirements.

PoINT Archival Gateway provides an AWS S3–compatible interface. By using this interface, StorageGRID Webscale integration with Archival Gateway can transparently archive inactive data to tape library systems.

The archive service (archive node) of StorageGRID communicates with PoINT Archival Gateway through the standardized S3 compatible interface, which acts as middleware between the archive node of StorageGRID and Tape Library systems.

Benefits

  • Integrate tape systems with NetApp StorageGRID Webscale
  • Optimize data placement with object data archiving to tape
  • Fulfill archiving requirements
  • Recover valuable disk storage space
  • Create backup copies on tape media
  • Manage offline tape media
